Badass Shi Hao is the best Shi Hao! As for Yue Chan, she’s nothing but a self-righteous b!tch andwill always be. Neither of the Yue Chans are saint as YC #2 did try to betray SH but she realises her main body is the bigger b!tch so she had no choice but to choose the devil. This is where they both went their separate ways and never reconcile until the devil dies (or was believed to be dead). Qing Yi (YC #2) finally agrees to merge with the main body so that she can avenge her beloved SH but too bad, in the end she chose cultivation instead of SH in which she later regretted. Though she’s not my favourite waifu, Qing Yi indeed spent the most time with SH gallivanting around the different worlds together.

SH’s fav gal (Huo Linger) on the other hand is more like a background decoration, she disappears for 95% of the time but the 5% where she appears is enough to make their love story the most tragic of the three. Yes, they never meet again until much later in the upper realm and in the meantime, she actually built a tomb for him after finding out that he died in the lower realm. SH bumped into her by chance and saw that she was mourning for him all these years.

But for me, the most tragic figure is still Yun Xi. Imagine your husband ignores you on your wedding night, instead he chooses to break through to immortality and he only consummates his marriage with you hundreds of years later!😱 For that reason alone, Yun Xi is the best waifu material — she’s patient, selfless and loyal. But SH’s love life can be summed up with one word: tragic. That’s why I said in my previous comment, Chen Dong (the author) really doesn’t do romance!

I’m not sure how to answer your question. I’m not a Chinese speaker myself but I did learn the language during my college days. If you just want to understand Chinese donghuas better, any YouTubers that run a language learning channel can already help a lot. There’re quite a few English native speakers who teach people simple mandarin and some even do reaction on popular donghuas. If you’re dead serious, just take an online course or private lessons.

But I can speak from experience, watching Chinese donghuas and reading the related light novels has helped me more in my “miserable” Chinese proficiency than any university classes ever did.

I’ve read the novel twice. First time I was pissed off with the ending but only in the second time, I began to appreciate the beauty of the story.

One gentle reminder: the author of PW likes to use superfluous and superlative descriptions, e.g. ghosts cry, gods howl = something world defying. Most of those phrases are actually Chinese similes, metaphors and idioms. So bear with it. Also you need to have lots of patience with the typical peanut gallery who does nothing but to mock and scoff the MC.

If you can look past the fluff, you’ll enjoy it much more especially the humour and the tragedy are top notch. I rarely laughed so much and felt so distressed reading a Chinese novel, PW is the first.
